My tan interior is now black

Post by ga.spyder »

I had posted a while ago re. dyeing my newly aquired seats(thanks kmac),to match my camel interior or changing the interior to black.I have played around with it ,and now have decided to go black. It has the seal of approval from my wife, daughter, and Denise ;) I didnt want to change to black, but I really like it now.
A couple things, The boot pictured is an old one that I dyed black.I have a new ,really nice one from IAP that I have yet to install.I want to make sure the edge of my tan top doesnt peek out from under the corners.I may go the baltobernie route, and let an upholstery shop fit it and even install snaps as needed
My daughter dyed the raised accent areas on the door panel ,and the strip in the armrest, to add some black to the doors.I like it and will probably keep the two-tone look.I could also change to black door panels later.
The early model seats bolt right up to the later tracks but thats where the similarity ends. They definitely have a different shape, bolstering, and linkage. That caused a couple issues.First, they early seats have a 'lug' that sticks out on each side that locks the seatback into place. The late model seats lock internally.I had to grind the lugs down about 1/8" to keep it from dragging on the carpet on the tranny hump.
I had to have Brady make new Bradybelter seat belt guides. The ones(that fit perfect) from my original seats, stuck out too far and rubbed the boot cover when the seats were all the way back.I had them chrome powder coated by a friend. He is starting a business and will work cheap,if anyone needs some powder coating done. What do you think?

Looks like the dye goes on pretty uniformly? I am thinking of changing my interior over too.

Just to be clear, the seats were black. The only dyed pieces in there now are the boot cover(soon to be replaced with a new black one),the rear kick panels, and the rear seat back cushion.I have had very good luck with the SEM dye, which I get from Eastwoods.I always use adhesion promotor, which is like a primer for plastics.I dont hesitate to use it.

I like the black - but I gotta be honest - I'm not crazy about the two toned look. Looks like a conversion not completed.

Well, I guess it's OK that you didn't take me up on my offer to help you out and take those seats. They look great in your car, and black wouldn't work out here in the Mojave anyway.

Thanks for being honest,Bruce.Thats why I put it out there for some feedback.I have left it for now,but it could easily be made all black in about an hours time.I have even put some feelers out for black door panels but would probably go the dyeing route ,for financial reasons.
Ron,I was/am worried about the black being hot,and was really against the black interior.I like it now, though. My daughter(the critic  ) was the one I really thought would hate it.She actually loves it!So,sorry...but I'm keepin' the seats

Keep some white beach towels in the car for the seats.

I agree with Bruce. The two toned door panels just don't look right. But, the rest looks great! :D

OK, so I may be the oddball, but I like the look of the tan door panels with the black seats. I also think the accents tie the two colors together. But then again, I wouldn't have black seats. It's your car, make it what you want.

Not neccesarily the oddball.Everyone who has seen the car in person has liked the 2 tone look. And,lets face it...the door panels were 2 tone when the seats were tan...from the factory. :D

I'm also going black in my car. Happy to see you've had luck dying the tan. I have a complete tan interior that is stained. It's in decent shape. I also bought the Eastwood black dye, but did not buy the adhesion promoter. I need to find a good one locally.

I also don't care for the two tone, however, I bet grey with black lines would look pretty nice. But the tan makes it look unfinished. Maybe because we all know it was originally tan. The nice thing about the two tone is that it brings some more brown into the mix outside of the dash, but if it were black or a shade of grey then the dash would be more of a display piece.

Love the two-tone. It ties the wood grain in with the rest of the interior. Sharp.
