New dash

Post by dmg36054 »

My dashed is cracked and needs to be replaced (along with the rest of the interior). Not interested in a cap....I want to replace the whole thing. My spider is a 1981 model. Anyone replaced a CS2 dash? Will the wood fit around the steering column area, or will it need to be trimmed? If so, how much? IAP has 25% off this week, and Autoricambi has a sale going on too. I thought I'd load up on stuff I need.

Here is an idea. I have and 81 and ran into the same issue. Dash was cracked and in need of replacement or repair. I fixed the cracks and had it recovered. It was cheaper than buying a new dash.

I've had several dashes recovered and they do look great, but you have to be aware that the wood will need some triming on the edges to fit properly. It all depends on how thick the vinyl is that you use, but some mods will be needed

I'm considering repairing and covering my dash too. I'd really like to do a nice chocolate leather with stitching along the topline edge. Has anyone else done that? I'm sure it isn't as economical as pleather but I think it would really stand out.

Mark your so right. There is some trimming on the wood trim. The glove box door and the instrument panel took about 30 min a piece to get them to fit properly. I was careful and didn't want to trim too much.

I too have "THE CRACK" in my dash. I was able to glue it before it made it to the face of the dash. After that, I got one of those black dash mats. It's such a small area to cover, you never even notice the mat or the crack  . looks good and it's a perfect fit. Not to meniion, it was relly inexpensive and requirred a very, very minimal amount of labor.

Just a thought, the re-covered dashes look great and those plastic ones would really look great.

Lots of various ideas. Thanks guys. I still think I'm leaning toward replacing the whole thing. Csaba has a "soft" dashboard that sounds interesting. I need to give him a call and find out more about it. It looks like the one from IAP is not "soft", i.e. not padded. Anyone out there used either one of these?

The replacement dashes that Auto Ricambi carries aren't that expensive. I put a replacement "soft touch" dash in my Spider. I got mine from Mr Fiat for around $360.00 (they are now asking $600 for the soft dash  ). I would have gotten it from Auto Ricambi, but they didn't carry them then. AR charge $389 for the replacement. I am guessing that the one Mr Fiat sells comes from the same source as the one AR sells - if so it is very high quality.
