'72 vs '79 body

Post by kbee00 »

I thought I knew how to spot a '72 vs '79 and realize that I don't have a clue.... not the mechanicals but the visuals - doors, exterior stuff, etc. Motor, driveline, etc. I think I have a pretty good handle on the differences.....then again, probably not...geesh

I have been on a crash course to learn about these cars. The more I think I know, the more I know I don't know.....

What are the differences - don't care about bumpers or interior trim - just the detail stuff. Doors, tail lights, etc.

Thanks for your patience.......and help

67-69 have its own style of small taillight, the backup light in not intrigal, is on the bumper. the outside door handles look the same thru mid year 78, the inner door latches on the 67-70 are different, they are like the early 850 kinda round. the 71-72 are different, at least in position, i belive they dont have a plastic outer covering, these are as best i remember, 73 on the inside door latch are the same. the 70-71 have its own style tail light only has 2 lenses, reflectors are horzontal, the ends wrap around just a little, 72-78 use the same taillight, but in 76 the turn signal lenses went to amber. 79 on use its own taillight. 74 and earlyer the front turn signal is in the fender, starting in 75 the lower valence, has a grill. starting in 79 the grill surround has a moulding on the hood lip as well, 67-72 use a no bump hood, the 73-78 use a small bump hood, 79 on have the large bump hood, the latest hood from 84ish on have a rectangle hood emblem embossment. 74 and earlyer the front "fiat" emblem is in the grill, from 75 on its on the hood. 67-69 the rocker chrome is on the side of the rocker not on the top lip of the pannel, this is from memory, exact production dates will be quoated im sure.

There are some transition years but here are a couple of pictures
These are the door handles on a 74, same on the 72 and up until mid 78.

These door handles are on a late 78.

Beek I think you pretty much nailed it on everything but the side marker lights are different from 79-85
they are close to flush with the body .

sidemarker lights, the 67-70 are round, 71 stand by themselfs, they are elongated, the reflector and the light are seperate , in the same housing, 72-78 use the same, they are recessed, the 79-85 use the same lense, except for bulb mount lock, but will interchange, they are mounted flush though.
