Fuse amperage question for '81 Spider 2000 FI

Post by ScottYoung »

Howdy gurus, the fuse in the letter i position, fourth from the left end of the fuse box is giving me some trouble. The car came with a 16 amp fuse in that position. The circuit feeds the courtesy light among other things... not sure what other things since the last owner added some toggle switches on a panel under the dash above the fuse box..... two of these toggles are flipped on to start the car, one powers the alternator exciter light in the tach and also feeds the second switch which turns on all the
red indicators on the dash, then turning the ignition key will spin the starter motor and fire up the engine. I believe this was done rather than replace a bum ignition switch. Anyway, the car will sometimes stall and appear dead electrically, when I tweak that 16 amp fuse a bit in its holder the power is restored to the courtesy light and the car will restart.
The other evening in a heavy rain storm I was driving home in traffic and that same fuse blew out, (I was running the wipers and the heater switch was on to the low flow position). five replacement fuses, some scrap wire and alligator clips and about an hour later I got home.... Yesterday I replace both of the toggle switches with heavy duty versions and cleaned up the contacts in fuse box with de-oxit and 600 grit paper. I've checked the cars glove box manual which calls for an 8 amp fuse, the official Fiat repair manual which came with the car says that this car uses three 16 amp fuses and the rest are 8 amps.....but in the list of protected circuits the courtesy light circuit says its a 25 amp fuse.......... Does anyone out there know which amperage fuse is correct for this circuit?
Thanks for your help. :(

One of my manuals (the supposedly a FIAT-issued Factory Shop Manual), also calls for a 25 A fuse in postion "I", but I believe this to be incorrect. The Brooklands manual calls for an 8 A in that position, serving the clock, courtesy light, hazard flasher, insp lamp, key and seatbelt buzzer. The text in both manuals calls for (9) 8A and (3) 16A fuses, so the 25A is probably a misprint. It sounds like you have a "modified" situation on your hands.
