my new P.O.S.

Post by htchevyii »

Fiats rarely come up on Craigslist in my area, in fact i have purchased or attempted to purchase most of the ones I've found on Craigslist in the last 4 years, (perhaps lucky for me the 850 Spider was being purchased as I called). I saw one a few weeks ago that was advertised as having no transmission or interior for $300. I really don't need any more projects right now, (I just brought my neglected 64 Chevy II home to do some bodywork and repairs, it's somehow been on the back burner for years even though I've owned it for over half of my life).
So, I finally decided that I'd better check it out, just incase it was something great. well, It really isn't, but I bought it anyway. I have seen the car around, the owner drove it 70+ miles per day for a few years, until the trans went south. He has actually done quite a bit of mechanical work to it, including a complete rearend rebuild, (ring and pinion, bearings, etc) and is a mechanic at a local shop. The body is rusty, there is no smog equipment and there is no interior. So, my plan is to strip off everything I can and throw in a used trans and seats that I allready have. I will then flog it at the local autocross until something terminal happends after which I'll part it out and junk it. I got it for $200, so as far as I'm concerned if I have a few weekends of fun I got my moneys worth!

I had a car obsession when we met, so she knew what she was in for, (I did sell my first car, 62 Chevy II to buy her engagement ring). She even helped me push it on the trailer :), (the POS Fiat).

Purple cam covers & yellow fan & shroud is a good combo for a POS :)

Thanks Craig, I really like them too. Mine has a 350 with forged pistons, Sportsman II heads, Torker II intake, 750 Edelbrock, a lopey Performer RPM cam, Crane roller rockers, MSD Dist, etc. Transmission is a TH350 with a shift kit and 2500 stall converter. I've got a set of subframe connectors and Hooker Super Comp fenderwell exit headers I'm getting ready to install. Next up will be a narrowed Ford 9". HP is around 400, but until I can get some bigger sticky tires on it, I can't really put it to the ground.

ya, it's unlike driving any of my other cars and usually leaves me shaking when I'm done. It weighs 2900 lbs, so the power to weight ratio is pretty good. I've had it at the track, but it had 14" street tires, an open differential and 3.08 gears. The best time I ran was 13.95 @107 MPH. With that MPH it should be much faster, but you have to leave the line like a grandma or you're up in smoke. It's finally time to get a decent rear end in there with some sticky tires. My first car was a '62 Chevy II when I was 15. I worked on it for 2 years, before getting it drivable. By the time I was out of high school the body had taken a beating, so all the Hi PO parts were swaped to the '64. It still has the same short block as it had 20 years ago!

Gee, it's only been 11 months since I bought the POS and I finally twisted the first wrench on it today. I spent more time looking for nuts and bolts than actually installing the trans and driveline. Good thing I saved most of the hard to find hardware from the last parts car. I need to get the header out of my storage garage, (it didn't come with any exhaust for the single outlet manifold) and see how it runs? It actually does have a lot of new parts, (t-stat, brake hoses, pads, rad hoses, w/p, flex disc, etc), so hopefully it will run OK and we can go beat the piss out of it for awhile.
