A couple dumb questions.

Post by nadman009 »

I am new to spiders and fairly new to auto-work. I have an 82 FI that I'm starting to restore, but i need a few questions answered.

In terms of of shop manuals, what do you guys recommend, and where do I get it from? I need electrical diagnostic stuff, engine tear down would be good, just a general shop manual for my spider to torque things correctly and get my FI to work.

There are 2 electrical plug things in between my spark plugs. What are they for?

If I am looking at the front of the car, exhaust on left and intake on right, my spark plugs should be hooked up like this: 1 goes to the closest cylinder, then 3, 4, and 2 in the back. Just want to make sure because I am confused.

My car does not have AC, does that explain a missing relay? Under the glove box is the relay panel, which has space for 4 relays and the double relay. However, I only have 3 relays there, like someone pulled out the 4th one.

There is a 3-way toggle switch under the dash(just hanging from wires) to the left of the steering column. I have a feeling this was a PO special...maybe not, I just want to know what it does and why its there...could be a fan override or something.

And lastly there is a white wire that goes between my distributor and ignition coil, inside that coating are 2 wires, black and blue. the connector broke off where they hook up to the coil, which goes on which tab? It's on the bottom of the coil.

Any help is appreciated, because guess and check doesn't work too well if the engine won't start.
Thanks

hello nadnam009
ok the two sencers between the spark plugs one is for the temp gauge and the other is for the cooling fan
the factory mixes them up so i cant tell you witch is witch

the cylinders are 1234 the cap is 1342 when it goes around

the missing relay i have to ask dose your horn work?i think it has a purple wire with others going to the relay

and the toggle switch should br the headlights factory installed that way

also you wont kill the ele ingition if you hook it up wrong--the white wire
when you do everything correct people arent sure youve done anything at all (futurama)

those are for the temperature guage, one is a resistor and one is a overheat switch

from front to rear 1,2,3,4 the firing order is 1342, but the engine is at TDc on the firing of cylinder #4

My car does not have AC, does that explain a missing relay? Under the glove box is the relay panel, which has space for 4 relays and the double relay. However, I only have 3 relays there, like someone pulled out the 4th one.

need more deatils, but the missing relay has nothing to do with a/c as all a/c systems were aftermarket or dealer/port installed.

just have to trace the wires.

thatis the distributor pickup. those wires are shielded and have to go to the terminals on the bottom of the module, the 2 plugs differ in size, should be easy to figure out.

Any help is appreciated, because guess and check doesn't work too well if the engine won't start.

The dangling Toggle Switch: My PO installed a manual radiator fan switch because he couldn't get the auto switch to work correctly. Wired always hot, he manually put the fan on when he felt the car needed it. It could also be an ignition kill switch, but you won't be able to tell that till you get the car running, so when you try to start it, you may want to try it in both positions? Best to trace those wires.

Artigue and this place here should about answer all your questions and then some. Hey, you might think they're dumb questions but they're not. You can do dumb things, trust me, like removing the magnet from the MAGNETIC pickup.
Welcome. Oh, don't ask me anything. I'm still learning too.

Ok awesome! Thanks for the help guys. Good to know about the sensors and VERY good to know about the spark wires(kinda important). Thats just the thing about the white wire, i cant figure out which is which because the connector broke off. I have two wires, a blue and a black, going to a small male connector, and a larger male connector on the distributor. But so long as it'll work either way then I'm safe.

I really hope its not an auto shut-off switch, but its possible. Every attempt to start the car I'll play with that switch a bit, just in case. And I'm not talking headlights lol

Ok so unless someone recommends a shop manual I'll try and get whatever I can find thats in stock. And here's the relay issue:

Thanks again for the help, I'm already spent hours searching through this site, its been very helpful.

The item in pic #1 is the "key in" warning buzzer in case you didn't know. The wires for it come from the ignition switch in the seperate two wire pigtail.

Yup I've got myself a project. I'm tackling the floor and seats while I figure out the electrical issue with the injectors.

I find it odd that I'm missing my horn relay, but the horn works :? Maybe its that unknown switch, I'll check that.
And it makes sense about that buzzer, as to why it was unplugged lol

Ok thanks a bunch. I guess the next step is to find a new double relay...but $70 doesn't sound very good. Most of the stuff I've been wondering about is unrelated to the problem.

Are you thinking of a new dual relay because yours doesn't work? Here's a good diagnostic for it if you need it:
http://www.wcmotors.com/personal/Fiat%2 ... agnostics/
Did you know that there's an inline fuse that supplies power to it from the ignition switch? It's on a brown with white stripe wire up behind the main fuse panel. If the fuse is blown or the fuse holder doesn't make good contact then the dual relay won't send the 12V to the fuel pump. You should see the brown with white wire at the dual relay.
