new addition to my stable!

Post by maytag »

Well folks, I've done it. I've taken the plunge and purchased my next Italian car.

It's not here yet, but in transit as we speak. I'm so excited I can hardly spit.

'87 Ferrari Testarossa, Red / Tan.

I found it in an old issue of Hemmings. It's been sitting for about 4 years in a climate-controlled environment, but that still concerns me. visually, it is flawless. Beautiful car. But I'm going to need to go through it carefully, as everything I read indicates the Ferrari doesn't like to sit. But the price was right, and I couldn't pass it up.

I'll post pics as I get into it. It'll sure be fun to see it sitting next to the Fiats!

Red is good. Sounds like you won't be driving your Fiat much now

when the fiat sites run dry, i go to ebay motors and see whats there. one page of fiats, 6 pages of ferraris. It is amazing to see how many have dropped to reasonable prices. Still not sure i could afford the $10k/yr cost of maintainence. First Tessy I saw was in a parking lot in Tokyo. Blew me away what a pretty car it is. congrats!

Holy smokes, Maytag. Now you've done it. I thought the Fiat bug was bad enough. Little did I know it would lead to a Ferrari infection. Sure hope my wife doesn't find out this is what this thing could lead to!!

Yes, now you've done it. I've had 2 of these, both 85's, and I have serviced quite a few over the years. I've found the ones that have been sitting usually need the engine out service, and the owner just couldn't afford it so put the car away. Don't let the cost of the service get to you, you can do it yourself and save almost the whole cost. Just drop the engine and trans out the bottom, and then it's easy to do the belts. In the shop, we charge around 7200 for the service, and I'll tell you it's all labor, and not much in parts.

This is precisely what I've been planning-on. I've made sure I planned for the eventuality that I take it to a Ferrari dealer for the work, but I'd rather not. Partly because of my history with the same dealer when I've dealt with them on Maserati & Lotis that I've owned... but mainly because I still prefer to do my own maintenance. I still maintain my own Benz & Jaguar as well, and they are certainly more advance than a 27 yr old Ferrari.

I'm so excited, I can;t sleep. I've always loved the marque, and knew I was closing-in on ownership. It wasn't until the last 6 months or so that I started thinking Testarossa, as opposed to a 3*8 series car. I think the V12 is a safe purchase right now. I think nearly ALL Ferraris are at the bottom of their value right now. the market for these cars is quite depressed, due to economic conditions. But I think the V12's will return in value. I think they will appreciate over time, where I'm not sure I'd say the same about the V8 cars.

Sorry... I'm babbling. So damn STOKED!

I understand the enthusiasm, felt it many times. I've always loved the marque myself. I think you are right, the mid engined F cars are at good prices, and the front engined, of course, always demand top dollar. Right now, I have half ownership of a 68 246, and I think it is the last mid engined car I'll have, I really do love the front engined cars better, it's a personal thing I guess.
At least parts are plentiful for the Testarossa, lots of wrecked or burned cars around, and I think they made around 10,000 of these in one of the three variations. Besides, the boxer engine really is bulletproof, as long as it's taken care of. Congratulations on the purchase, I hope it is everything you expect, and enjoy.

Congratulations!

There is certainly nothing like the feel of a v-12, even a low-tuned one like my Jag.
