starter question
I need to purchase a new starter motor for my 77. I have seen them for over 200$ refurbished from a few vendors which seems a bit pricey since you can buy a new allison's gear reduction starter for that. The best price I have been able to find it is 70 dollars on ebay for a 124 starter, part number 6256. Would this be my best bet? I saw some others that said they we're for 124's but not spiders.

Re: starter question
The only problem is you don't know how good the one on Ebay is. Why not look for a local rebuilder and have them go through yours? It cost me around $100 and my rebuilder makes sure everything is reconditioned, not just the parts that have failed.

Re: starter question
Your best bet for long term reliability is a new gear reduction starter.

Re: starter question
a big issue with rebuilding the oem starters is lack of availability of new windings. If the windings in your old starter are burned up, you're faced with finding parts from a used starter. Not the best route for a long service life. That was just one of the many reasons we sourced the gear reduction starter. Not only do you save 8lbs of weight, they are a breeze to change and gain a slightly faster cranking rpm
