sway bar bushings

Post by smokey14 »

I recently purchased new bushings for the front sway bar for an 83 pinnin. I drilled out the center two clamps and removed the old bushings. when I went to put in the new bushings there is no way they will fit, I can't squeeze them together enough to get the two pieces to join and if I could I wouldn't be able to get the bar back in. Any help will be appreciated

Pictures of the bushings would help, so we know you got the right ones.

I didn't know there were different bushings, maybe I can just call IAP and ask if I might have the wrong ones. I'm sorry but I don't have a clue how to post pictures, when my grandchildren come over on thanksgiving maybe one of them will help with that

The outer bushings at the control arms are bigger and "simple looking" while the inner bushings contained in the brackets are smaller and have several angles in the surface.

These are inner bushings: http://stores.auto-ricambi.net/-strse-1 ... Detail.bok

Matt, The picture you posted of the inner bushings look exactly like the ones I purchased. The problem is that the top of the bushing where the nipple is won't fit up all the way like it is too wide. Maybe these have to be cut down.

If they are just a little too big you may be able to fit it all together, hold it in position, and use a jack to put some pressure on the bracket so you can get the nuts started. If it's way too big this won't work...

You want the rubber to compress around the bar, so try not to cut them. It will take some force to get it all sandwiched together. Adding some grease to the outside surface of the bushing will allow it to slip against the bracket and fit up where its supposed to go.

I contacted IAP and they sent me new bushings that are at least 30% smaller than the ones I got from the other vendor. It seems they will fit nicely. Thank for all your help and I will be using the tip about spot welds and spacers.
