obscure tonneau cover

Post by jbills »

you all ever seen anything like this?

Image

the owner said he got it 17 years ago with the car and didn't know where it came from nor did he have any clues as to a brand name or anything.

sounded pretty nifty - I always liked the idea of leaving my top down sometimes but don't like the idea of what the sun is going to do to my interior.

only downside is he said there's some permanent piece of velcro affixed to the dash. I might skip that, but regardless...

any leads?

Jbills I ran across these two sites looking for tops and tonneau covers. I don't know anything about either company and have not ordered from them. 1) http://www.convertibletopguys.com 2) http://www.worlduph.com on the world uph site click on the beta version just above the picture of the spider the info is easier to find

Very similar to the one on my Dad's MGB. It takes 3x as long for him to attach it as it does for me to close the top on the Fiat, although it's still easier than putting up the top on a B.

These tonneau covers were widely offered for various European convertibles back in the 1970's/80's by a North Hollywood, CA-based aftermarket parts company called AMCO. They offered most of the add-on things like gearshift knobs, center console/armrest units, rubber/coco floor mats, chrome bumper overrider bars, chrome luggage racks, radio consoles/kits, tonneau covers, replacement convertible tops, etc..

I've had several of these AMCO tonneaus on my 850 Spiders through the years & they've always worked/held up great. 8)

Here's a photo of my old '69 850 Spider with an AMCO tonneau for 850's with low-back seats (no headrests = no "pockets" in the tonneau for them like on the 124 you've shown):

That's why tonneau covers were not popular on Italian sports car: you could put the top up in less time!

Funny, my '79 spider had one 25 years ago. I bought the car used and it came that way. Not sure if it was an original item, it looked like it had been added. It basically had 4 metal legs that attached to the sides of the lower console between the seats. It sat up about 4 inches above the center console and was black vinyl. If I recall, it wasn't quite long enough to rest your right elbo on it and still reach the steering wheel so it was largely useless as far as I was concerned. I'll search through my old pics and see if I have any of that car, not sure I still have anything from so long ago.
