Paint Touch up options

Post by natesky »

I'm wondering if anyone has particular advice for dealing with stone chips in my Fiat's original paint. (Code 285 'Safari Ivory')

As I see it, I have a few options (1 and 4 are not preferred solutions though)

1) squint
2) Wet sand, dab in primer until chips flush, paint chin area w/ color matched aerosol acrylic paint… try in vain to blend it.
3) Use color-matched paint ‘pen’ on each chip.
4) Vinyl bra

Anyone have particular advice here? Should I live with it and perhaps do a full paint job later?

Thanks!

I don't know what to say because it's a realllly old paint job, but here's what I do with the stone chips on my newer cars.

1. sand the point with a chip sanding pen thingy (that can't be the technical term, but you can find them at most auto stores, I got mine at walmart) to remove any rust.

2. use one of those color matched fingernail polish looking paints in the auto paint sections of your favorite auto store. It only has to be close, not perfect.

3. If you feel you must at this point you can wetsand with 2000 or finer. But then you must buff the bejeezes out of it. Use turtlewax rubbing compound then a polishing compound then wax it up all nice.

primer shouldn't be needed for chips, but if you got some flaking of the paint where the chip was then you might have to be more thorough than I just described.

I definitely wouldn't put a bra on it. As well as being confining and uncomfortable, it will trap moisture and cause rust. Some will even rub spots on the paint. The 82 X I just bought had a bra and the hood and fender has rust through damage.
This place offers several colors. When putting in "285" for Fiat it comes up with Safari yellow.

It might be worth a try to order a bottle.
