camera mounted on rollbar

Hey all!
I got a new sports-camera (fancy-name for a helmet-cam). I mounted it to the rollbar and took it for a spin. the noises are very cool.... but I could use some ideas about how to eliminate the wind noise?

someone on the forum did the same thing on there race car and i asked how they eliminated the wind noise
he said they used tape over the mic and you could still the engine noises but the wind noise was very minimal
at times not even present .

I'm going to attempt to use my hd hero cam on a windshield mount tomorrow. It has 2 backs, one with a full cover and one with gaps in it. I'll try both.

Then I'll figure out how to edit it into a real movie, I have tons of clips from skiing, mountain biking etc. time to take a class I think.

Your best bet is to connect a cabled remote microphone placed out of direct wind. You can get a large foam wind baffle for your helmet cam which will help, but not eliminate it. Remote microphones are a great way to go because you can place them down low out near the floorboards in the front or back seat. You could also try to fabricate a wind deflector to stop the wind buffeting.

Remote microphones were the only thing that worked with our commercial cameras when I ran a marketing office with a radio and video production facility.

thanks for the suggestions. this particular camera has no provisions for a remote mic, but I am going to try a baffle over the mic, and then duct-tape, as suggested. we'll see what comes of it.

by the way.... just so it's clear... if you viewed the video: the car has NO 1st gear..... it's not that I don't know how to work a clutch...

The price was right, and it was the best one that REI had in stock. (I needed something waterproof, and on-hand, since my other camera had quit that morning)

I'm reading tht the GoPro would've been a better choice for this application, but probably not for the application for which I originally purchased it.

I'm gonna try a foam cover.

the motor is a stock / tired 1800, with 75000 miles on it. I've replaced the points dist with an electronic dist from a '79, running vacuum advance. still got the stock 32adfa carb. I've done my best to keep it tuned-up and running well... but I'll be honest: the other project and motor for it are getting a lot ore of my spare time lately, and this one is falling a little into disrepair. hence no 1st gear. (I actually swapped-out a trans with no 2nd gear, only to discover the trans I pout in was missing 1st.... )

The motor revs to 8k rpm without even complaining... but the power falls off sharply at about 6800 rpm. so past that, it;s just for the awesome noises it makes.

I used my go pro mounted to the windshield and all I got was wind noise. Do you use the open or closed back? I suppose I could put it in the car next time, but the video quality is excellent with the suction cup mount.

I use the waterproof closed casing only because we're running dirt tracks. It's also supposed to help with the wind noise.

You've taken the motor to 8k? I was under the impression that conrods/bearings in these motors fail above 7k?

well, if you watch the video you can see the motor revving well past 7k. as a matter of fact, at about 1:11 in, it hits 7500k-ish.

I don't know when rods & bearings typically fail on these..... but my motor does that (7k+) every time I get in the car... For me, that's the greatest thing about these motors: their willingness to rev, and the way they sound when they do.
