Alignment Settings

Post by WYSpider »

Does anybody have "no-load" wheel alignment settings (toe in, camber, etc) for a 1980 spider? The ones in the manuals require the car to be loaded with 430 lbs (2 persons + luggage).

Brad Artigue has a library of service letters .... this one gives the info you need.
http://www.artigue.com/fiatcontent/serv ... 000-49.pdf
It's mislabeled as ...

Service Letter 000-49
E.P.A. and California Emission (Published 1981)

... but when you download it it's "WHEEL ALIGNMENT SPECIFICATIONS 1980-81 MODELS".
It states that "All specifications refer to unladen vehicles."
Hope this helps.

WYS,

I've got a bunch of numbers at my office. I'll post them tomorrow if I can find a spare few minutes.

Hi WYS

Here are some alignment specs. I have these in a formatted spreadsheet but it won't copy and paste properly into this reply box no matter how I set it up. I'd be happy to PM you the file if you are interested. Here is what this represents.

After battling front end issues on my Spider for the last year and a half, finally, thanks to the Jersey Boys, and another whole set of front end parts, it looks like it is sorted out. The final step was the alignment which I had done at a local Midas shop that has a fancy new alignment machine. It had the Spider specs in the computer.

The computer specs differed from the unladen specs I got from here and other websites, but to my eye the differences are not significant. Following is my Spider's before and after numbers followed by the Midas computer specs and the Fiat unladen specs.

Camber Caster Toe
Before Left Front -0.5° 4.0° 0.59°
Before Right Front -1.7° 2.2° 0.73°

After Left Front 0.8° 3.5° 0.16°
After Right Front 0.3° 3.3° 0.16°

Before Total Toe 1.32°
After Total Toe 0.32°

Computer Specs Acceptable Range
0.00 to 1.00° 3.00 to 4.00° 0.06 to 0.19°

Fiat Unladen Specs Acceptable Range
-0.20 to +0.40° 2.40 to 3.40° +4 to +8 mm

Beek’s comments about properly tightening the control arm nuts and his other advice should be reviewed. He knows what he’s talking about. Putting a twisting strain on the bushings eat them up fast.

If any one has any comments about these specs or has other suggestions I’d like to hear them.

If you can send in an Excel 2000 format that would work.

Another option is to use PDF Creator from SourceForge. Once installed PDF Creator shows up as another printer in your Windows apps (Word, Excel, Project, etc). You "print" the file to PDF Creator and the output is a PDF file any Acrobat user can view. Great app when you don't want to use paper.

SourceForge is a trusted site for the software development community. I haven't used the latest version but have used PDF Creator 0.9.3 since 2007 without problems.
