Paint for Timing belt cover
I have seen a yellow and red painted timing belt cover and would like to duplicate for my '69. What brand of primer and paint did you use and how did you prep the cover? Thanks Mik
Re: Paint for Timing belt cover
Haven't done it myself, but I imagine folks are using the Krylon Fusion paint which is specially made for plastics.
For an underhood item, prep is going to have to include thoroughly cleaning all oil and grease stains. Many different brands of degreaser out there, pick your favorite, but then also use a Paint Prep product from a respectable auto body supply shop. Then shoot some Kylon Fusion spraybomb in your choice of color at it, and it should look great!

The original belt cover on the 69 was metal, part magnesium. I had mine powder coated instead.
Re: Paint for Timing belt cover
Magnesium is good when you don't want to carry a flare.

Hmm, I didn't know the earlier Spiders had a metal cover. Both of my Spiders have been 79 or later.
I remember buring magnesium VW engine blocks back at cookouts with my fellow VW Westfalia campers. That was years ago, no telling what kind of fumes we inhaled. Oh, to be young and dumb.

the yellow is a rust-o-lem sun yellow. A 69 should be aluminum i would take it to a local car bump and dent shop and have it eboxy primered. But i polished the one on my 68 and it looked great better than any old paint

Thanks for the responses. I think i will try cleaning and polishing up the metal and see what it looks like. I can always paint afterwards if I feel the need. Any special polish used? Thanks, Mik

I took your advice and it looks pretty amazing. Like a chrome timing belt cover. Sure glad I didn't do the paint thing. Thanks again, Mikgrittracing wrote:the yellow is a rust-o-lem sun yellow.
