Front Grill

Post by reservoirdog »

Lately I've been looking a some cars on this site where the front grills are chrome, either painted or replaced with some kind of mesh. I think I like the look.

My front grill, top and bottom, are painted black, but it seems to be peeling and I see chrome color underneath (maybe). Does anyone know if the grills were originally chrome on the car? My PO gave this car a cheap paint job, so I'm not sure what the original look was.

I've got some that were powder coated silver-almost chrome. Chroming the grille isn't very feasible since it would have to be polished after chromng. The darn thing is too flimsy to polish

They've always been black. You can get chrome and aluminum mesh to replace your grille, or retrofit something from another car into the opening. You'll see many Chevy trucks with the horizontal chrome bars. I'd bet you could get one at a wrecking yard and modify it.

I like the 57 Corvette look myself! If only I could afford to make it like my avatar.

You can't go too flush with the front. The hood hinges into the grill area. This will require you to set the grill back a little bit. That's why my grille on my avatar wouldn't work in reality. The hood would hit the grill.

Afaik, the 67-68 AS had a chromed grille, the BS-1 and CS-1 up to 75 had a grey honeycomb grille, as of then all were black.
Have you seen the Spider Point grilles for 75 onward? Stainless steel.... nice! See here

And 70 thru 72 had the aluminum mesh grille. 73 was the start of the black grille but still had the emblem attached to it.
