mothers' clay bar detailer

Post by manoa matt »

WOW, I just used the Mother's clay bar system to clean the dirt and grit from the horizontal surfaces of my spider (hood, fenders, top surface of doors, trunk and rear fenders). I saw some guys use it on one of those DIY car shows.

That made a big big difference. The paint is smooth as glass. Highly recommended.

Its a bit expensive at $20, but it will clean two to three cars before the clay bar is exhausted, but since the spider is small it may last longer.

does it require a lubricant also?

Yes it does.

$20 gets you a clay bar about the size of a business card 3/4" thick, a bottle of the lubricant detailer which smells like cinnamon and a small bottle of cleaner/wax that smells like berries.

Not sure why they decided to make everything smell good. Better than chemical smell i guess.

$20 was at local parts store, may be cheaper elseware, but again deffinatly worth it to remove those particles stuck in the paint before you decide to lock them in with a coat of wax.

Here is a trick: Gently rub your hand across the hood, then rub your hand across the side of the door on the vertical surface. Notice a difference? The clay bar will get your whole car as smooth as the door.

It's a great product to eliminate overspray too, but I use it with soapy water. I also use it on my windshield to get the road film off.

It's never really exhausted, it just gets dirtier. I go more by the amount of gunk in it than the number of uses. On cars that sit in garages and don't see much use, you should get more than 10. Even then I keep the old ones for tough spots on rocker panels and bumpers.
When the lube spray runs out I found Meguiars Quick Detailer works just as well.
