gear ratio

Post by nibbes123 »

This may sound dumb but how would someone know the gear ratio on a diff. not know what year of fiat it came from. I know the early years you had to disconnect the drive shaft to open it up later years you just remove the back cover . But my question is there a number on the diff. housing to go by with.

Thanks

Fix one end (wheel) so it can't move. Rotate the other wheel one complete turn while counting the number of turns of the input yoke. Multiply by 2. That's the ratio.

There is numbering stenciled on the diff, but most have worn off by now. This is a 3.90 ratio
