VIN number

Hi all,

I'm just joining this page for the first time as I have recently purchased a 1978 Spider and I am really excited to find out more about this car's history.

The problem is, I looked at the VIN plates and got the number that was on there, but the internet tells me that I am 4 characters short.

Is this an Italian thing? or am I missing something?

Its not an Italian thing...its a pre 1981 thing. The 17 digit VIN did not go into effect until 80-81ish.

Check some of the other forums and this one for "Fiat Registry" . That might be of some help
