Is there a Tonneau cover for the Fiat 124 spider?

Post by EmptyCircle »

Hi

Is there a Tonneau cover for the Fiat 124 spider? I always love the look, it would feel like a single seat race car.

seen some custom jobs. My objection is the latches are a pain to polish around and are prone to creating rust. The rag top on a spider is the easiest up and down on the planet. seemed to make a toneau unnecessary.

There is one on eBay right now, do a search for Pininfarina tonneau, and you'll find it. I asked the seller if he was sure he really had a tonneau, because so many people confuse a tonneau with a boot cover, he was clear that he had a tonneau. Multiple items for sale, I think he has a buy it now for $250.

Certainly Fiat never fitted, supplied or even designed for one.

The top was voted as the best working / easiest top to raise or lower.

I think George, NJFIAT, might have one in Parts for Sale, as well.

Note that seller is not giving any pics of the cover, nor even showing it on a car. Might be a &250 bit of junk. And the roofing screws you fix it to the body with might not match your paint !

I know an Austin Healy owner who has one on his car. Never drives with it on as says it billows and flaps. just uses it when parked to keep rain and dirt out. ( His top is a 2 person job to put up ! )

Here's a picture of the one that Hal, who sadly recently passed away, custom built for his 5 liter Spider. I think he said he used a hood from a 46 ford or something like that to build it from. It's not something that just anyone could do, Hal was extraordinary when it came to fabbing cars.

The one on eBay is advertised as made by Robbins, and they "usually" are a good quality manufacturer. I decided ot to get one for my Spider though, right now I have many more things to spend $250 on.

I will say, however, that I had one for years on my 2001 Miata SE. It was a great addition to the car, and I would go weeks of daily driving without putting the top up. Even getting caught in the rain was no big deal as long as you kept moving!

Here is a link to a new one. Some people call the convertible top parade cover a tonneau cover so I would be careful buying one used.

I had a Spitfire with a tonneau and I really liked it, great in cold weather too. The worst aspect is the snaps along the top edge of the door to attach it

That's not a torneau cover, that's just a flashed up boot over a lowered convertible top.

Actually, it is a tonneau cover by definition:

"Tonneau (US: /tʌˈnoʊ/, UK: /ˈtɒnoʊ/), describes a hard or soft cover used to protect unoccupied passenger seats in a convertible, roadster, or for a pickup truck bed. Hard tonneau covers open by a hinging or folding mechanism while soft covers open by rolling up."

It covers the rear passenger seat erea to almost the back of the front seats.
It's just not the type of cover being discussed. The purpose of the pic was to show a very nice custom built cover that some members may not have seen before.

Wow, who really cares about the tonneau. WHAT A FRICKING NICE SPIDER! Are those Alfa flutes on the dash? What kind of motor and trans are in that thing? Anyone got any additional pics of that spider? I don't know the man who built it but I read the post about the him and what happened - so sorry for his family. What a tallented man he must have been. Really, any additional pics of that spider?

The picture doesn't do it justice. Hal modified the body by adding 7" to the length between the rear of the wheel arch and the door. It's a 5 liter fuel injected Ford engine. The body sits on a custom built frame that Hal did himself. The stacks aren't for fuel, they're for air intake. You could spend hours looking at all the details and being blown away by the talent of the man. The badges on the side are the Ford blue oval, but he put FIAT on them in Ford script. The tailights are round Corvette. He cut and raised the section of the rear so that the top of the fenders to the trunk don't go downward, it's pretty much straight across. And the fuel filler is also a chrome flip up lid from Corvette.
Here's a shot of the engine bay:

I think he said it took 4 Spiders to make this one.
I wish I could find the pictures I took of the interior and rear end.
