What brand/type and size of air compressors are folks using

Post by seabeelt »

I have a Sears 125v, 33 gal, 150 psi unit. I have been using it now for the last 6 years off and on as I have time to work on the car. It works Ok with the impact wrench, and standard paint gun, but really lags with the little 40lb sand blaster unit from Harbor Freight. I havent tried my hvlp gun yet, but I'm guessing it isnt going to be big enough  in terms of pressure and volume for the gun. Most recently the air reed check valve broke and I found that the piston ring was shot as well. I replaced the check valve and piston ring/seal and it lasted about a half hour before it ate the seal again. So much for an oil-less unit. What are other folks using/or recommending. :?:

I have that unit and wore it out using my sand blasting tank. I bought one from Lowes and it keeps up with the tank. It also works well with an HVLP paint gun too. It's a Campbell Hausfeld 80 gal

Your old setup looks exactly like mine. Sounds like you are happy with the new tank. :)

I have a 3 hp industrial grade portable. It has a small tank and is on wheels. Nice to be able to take the compressor to where i need it. I have painted cars with this thing back in the high pressure days and it keeps up fine. with the new low pressure guns, you run them at 25 psi and air is not problem. sandblasting is another issue. doesnt come close to keeping up with a 1/4" nozzle.
Before I bought this one, i bought a 5 hp home depot type portable. it overheated so bad, i had to put a fan on the compressor while i painted so it wouldnt shut off.
If you dont need a portable, those uprights are nice. take a look at power consumption to make sure you dont blow your breaker panel off the wall.(amps is the name of the game), Need 220/240v. Have a campbell hausfield upright at the shop. Its never been pushed, so dont know what it will do.

I've been looking at the 60 gallon models as they are closer to my budget for a replacment. Harbor Freight has a 2 stage for around $800, but Home depot and Lowes have single stages for $500-$600.. Anyone know what the benefits of the 2 stage is over the single stage??

No home workshop compressor is going to keep up with even a small blast pot like you have. I have one similar, cannot recall what size/weight capacity it is supposed to be but stands 30" tall.
I run a large 4 cylinder broomwade pump with 55Hp motor into 90 gallon receiver and run out of air/ outrun the compressor in about 5 mins blast time. My biggest problem is moisture getting thru the traps and need to look at a dryer as well.

I solved the moisture problem with a 6 gallon bucket, some copper tubing and some ice water. About 20' of 1/4" coppertubing coiled inside the bucket, filled with the ice water to condense the moisture out of the air, and an additional moisture trap on the outlet. Its amazing how fast the trap fills up. I have to empty it every time I fill the blaster with media on most days, but no clogging problems from damp media.

So what would you recommend for a compressor that will let me fill tires, blow debris from around plugs, blow through hard lines? Not planning on doing any sandblasting.

For that all you need is about 2Hp, probably about a 5 gallon tank will be all you want. A separate cast iron pump (vee belt drive) is best for long life but the hermetic types where the motor bolts to the side of an alloy pump is how the cheapies are built these days.
A cast iron one should last for many years, the cheapies depend on how hard you work them but they have the advantage that you can pick them up and carry them- wheels and all, up stairs, around the shed/yard and they are cheap.
You will see the identical machine with different names, colors and labels depending which shop has it, and at all different prices !
If you can find it, look for one where the actual cylinder barrel is finned cast iron (like an old Harley) as the alloy barrel ones have an iron liner that can and do give problems.

Oh and do pay the extra for snap-on fittings, screw on ones on some cheap units get to be a pain in the butt. Rubber hoses cost about 3x the plastic ones but you do not have to "fight with them" in colder weather like some plastic ones.

If you are just topping up your tyres, you can fill a small compresser's tank, then carry it to your car- saving on long hoses or leads (which elec motors do not like).

After alot of research and haggeling with myself, I bought a new Ingersol 3hp 60 gal, single stage, 100% duty cycle unit to replace the craftsman. I got it from Northern as they had the best price and free shipping. The cfm will meet all of my tool requirements, I won't have to do too much re-wiring in the garage. I probably could have gotten a cheaper unit from Homedepot or Lowes, but all of thos units had a 50% duty cycle - meaning for every three minutes (for example) of compressing it needs three minutes of cooling. 100% means it has sufficient cooling area that it can run continuously with no cool off period in between. So it should keep up with the sand blaster and even a DA sander with no problem. :P

The compressor was $619 and if you buy the start up kit by Ingersol, they will extend the warranty for an additional year. The kit is their brand of oil and extra air filters.
