Traded bad 2nd gear for bad 1st gear ??

Post by maytag »

SUNNUVA!!!

Seriously bummed here. I had a bum 2nd gear.... so over the weekend I swapped for a trans from a parts-car.... only to find it has a bad 1st gear....

Maybe there's an adjustment of some sort y'all can tell me about? I know I need to adjust the clutch (frisction point is waaaay at the bottom of the stroke), but it seems like it isn't fully engaging 1st gear. it kicks-out the moment power is applied. well... more accurately: it seems to jump out/in repeatedly. makes a nasty noise and banging.

and otherwise: can anyone recommend a trans rebuilder that I can send the one I just took out to for a rebuild? Or should I attempt myself?
I'm no Boy-Racer..... but if I can't take every on-ramp at TWICE the posted limit.... I'm a total failure!

no adjustment on the gear/engagement side of things, only clutch free play adjustment. Trans are'nt too difficult, if you can get hold of a manual I'd expect you can do it yourself. The hardest part for you might be figuring out just which parts are worn. If you want to ship it to Calif, I'll do it for you

I've no doubt I 'could' do it.... nor do I doubt that you would do it better... and faster... for me lately, it is all about time.... it is moving to quickly.

Shall we PM on the details of cost and what you'd do? Or do you think that's a good discussion for the forum?

No problem. I've just sent you a PM.

In the meantime, I'm going to crawl back under and adjust the clutch free-play, but I don't anticipate this is going to solve the problem.
