Blinker lense color?

Post by DocGraphics »

My '78 has amber colored lenses over the rear signals, but when schnauser (Jim) was by last week with his '76 I noticed that it has the red lenses.
Did the lense color change w/ the years or county built for or ????
Wasn't the same tailight housing used from like '74 thru 78?

Again this is my OCD spiking as to the differences in the models.

The early cars has all red rear lenses. At some point in the mid 70's the Federal Gubment decided a red stop light and a red turn signal were too confusing to the typical American and mandated the blinker lenses be amber.

A 76 should have the amber blinker lens. I'm not 100% sure but I think the 74 tail light housings were special for that year only. They are longer and almost stick out past the body on the sides. I think the 74's had all red lenses in the rear. 1975 through 78 tail light housings should all be the same and have amber turn lenses.

I have two 71s and one 72 and most of the rear lenses have the amber TS. Course not sure what is OE, but my 72 is pretty much all original

In the VAS catalog I found it lists red lenses for '70 & late 72-78
& the amber lenses for 73-78.

So I read into that that 70 & late 72 were red lenses but 73-78 could be either.
So that solves next to nothing other than early were red as it looks like they are all interchangable 73 & on.
Wonder if Candian & European were the red in the later years?

Anybody else have the red blinker lenses on newer models?

I think it's the other way around, Matt. Europe had amber rear turn signals since forever, but our NHSTA didn't allow them here until the '80s, once they finally figured out that they were a better idea. Ditto sealed beam/composite headlights. Sometime in the next century, they will revise headlamp aiming rules considerate of SUVs, 4x4s, and those newfangled HID lamps.
