124 Spider External Coil Resistor and Bosch Blue

Post by SeldomSeen »

I am going to replace the old (probably original Marelli) coil on my '71 engine with a new Bosch Blue coil. The ad for it says no external resistor is necessary. I take it the resistor is that brown bakelite component bolted to the coil bracket. Surely the red wire to the coil just comes off but what do you do with the other one that comes from the wire harness? Does it connect to where the short red wire went on the coil? If the resistor is in series, that makes sense to me. I just don't want to trigger the nuclear kaboom switch. My ignition system has a Crane Cams Fireball XR3000 unit. BTW, what ignition advance is best for the XR3000?

Does anyone know the Bosch coil part number for this application? Centerline Alfa is nearby. They carry a lot of different Bosch coils but may not be able to reference the one for the Fiat.

i set the timing by ear.so it runs best
when you do everything correct people arent sure youve done anything at all (futurama)

The "ignition advance" is the same regardless of what style of system you have.

Setting timing by ear is a sure way to get it way off, and can lead to pinging, which leads to all sorts of headaches. Do it right, get a light.

No need for the resistor when running a xr3000, or put it this way you should not be running with a resistor or a high impedance coil either with this setup. Go to Advanced auto and buy the MSD blaster 2 coil.

Thanks all. The new Bosch blue is in and working. My local Advance Auto stores did not carry the MSD Blaster 2 coil.
