Trim adhesive

Post by mik »

I would like to put an adhesive on the grill edges and headlight trim rings, preferably with a small brush, to put the rubber trim back on. I have a '69 124as and also would like to know if anyone has ordered the f side emblem between door and rear well from Vicks. They said they had some coming in with the threaded posts for $28.95. IAP has the same emblem for $74.50. I was told from Vicks that it should be metal not plastic but they won't know until they get them in. Currently have one that I will be reattaching, needing a second, but want it to be metal with crown attached and have the threaded posts for bolting on. Thank you, Mik

Hi Mik,

My '74 original side emblems are pretty detailed. If you have a '69 yours should be also. How much you spend really depends on how close to original you want. Since there was such a variance in pricing I knew there had to be some difference. After ordering from several vendors I found by experience that they're all different is some ways; some are twice as thick, colors not correct, lack in detail and crowns look different etc... After numerous failed attempts I looked up IAP. I called them to inquire on how exact to the originals they were and the rep stated that they were stamped from the original molds. Suffice it to say I went ahead and ordered them, but was disappointed when they arrived. They were good replica's, but I dare to say they were NOT cast from the original molds. Here are some of the differences;

IAP's thickness was spot on with the originals
IAP's crowns were very good and has a nice enamel overlay
The red corners on the originals are very detailed where the lines shown in the red triangle are embossed. You can feel the serrations with your finger.
IAP’s looks like it has embossed lines, but they’re painted to look that way
The center “f” design on the original is highly detailed and also embossed
IAP’s does not have as much detail and is also painted to look like the original
However, it could be that IAP’s corners and center are indeed embossed, but don't appear that way because those areas are enameled over thus giving a smooth feel - I really can’t tell for sure.

Below is a photo of 3 emblems;

LEFT = ORIGINAL, CENTER = IAP, RIGHT = OTHER VENDOR

Notice how thick the RIGHT emblem is?

IAP's come with screws which I used to secure mine, but one could also use double sided tape since the screws are difficult to get to.

Hope this helps!

you can also grinf the studs off the back of the emblems. than use sylicone to glue them on. doesnt fall off. but will come back off easily when needed to replace.

Wow, thanks for all the detail on your experience and pics. I ordered the IAP emblem. Called them, he said it was metal, no etching or scrolling inside the f and had the threaded back. Looking at your pic, without the scrolling in the f it would be an identical match, will see. Thanks again for all the help.
