Radio antenna
Radio antenna
My 81 has a flexible /rubber antenna on the left rear fender. Recently, I met someone who had a -- I think -- 79 that had an antenna that fully telescoped up into the trunk, vertically, and you popped it loose to extent it with a little key.
Were these standard? I havent had any luck finding these in any of the parts catalogues or sites that I am familiar with.
What kind of an antenna was an 81 originally equipped with? My manuals dont show anything.
Thx,
T

Re: Radio antenna
My 79 has a coonector in the trunck and a connector under the dash for a power antenae as well as connector for power windows. These were options in 1979. I can't help you with a new one. Good luck.
Re: Radio antenna
I believe the antennas and radios were installed stateside. The dealers decided where and what type of antenna was installed. Mine isn't on the rear at all but on the right front fender like those from Detroit in that era. Replace with whatever you like because there isn't a hard and fast rule.

Re: Radio antenna
Most (not all) of the antennas that I've seen were on the driver's side read fender. I've seen manual antennas and electric antennas. My 79 was originally equipped with a static antenna and Fiat AM/FM Multiplex radio (ooooooh, ahhhhhh). The sound is actually quite good!
I now have an electric antenna (aftermarket) that I installed. I bought it from Radio Shack several years ago. My original radio came with a wiring harness with an electric antenna connection. Most stereo systems have this connector too.
The electric antenna is a tight fit, but it does fit into the fender space near the filler cap.

Re: Radio antenna
My 73 had the antenna mounted on the right front fender. It was the manual type so I moved it to the rear left and fitted an electric one.

Re: Radio antenna
I think the antenna location was a dealer option and so was placement. They tried different location each month or week as seen fit just to make us all go crazy wondering where they where going to be next. Or suppose to be. Lol
Re: Radio antenna
I bought mine off ebay. Just type in Fiat antenna and there is a place that sells different ones. I don't remember the name.

Re: Radio antenna
Mine no longer is sold by Radio Shack. This one looks very similar to it though: http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Metra+-+Ful ... &cp=1&lp=1
Mine might be a tad shorter from the base to where it mounts to the fender...and it cost me $39 or so.

Re: Radio antenna
My '81 is on the driver rear fender and has wiring for an electric one. Auto Zone or Advance Auto has Metra electric ones for about $60. The have a european version which is a little more compact too.

Re: Radio antenna
I found one at good old Canadian Tire. Not exactly what I was looking for since the "key" is just flat and fits into a slot on the top of the aerial that any penknife would fit into, but i'm going to give it a try. I just dont like the look of the black rubber antenna, it seems not to match the look and the date of the car.
