Speedometer For Automatic vs Standard.

Post by junker »

I have an 82 2000 and wanted to upgrade my speedo. Before I purchase a 140 MPH speedo I want to know if there is a difference. I was told by a local transmission shop that the speedometer drive on a automatic turns the opposite of a manual transmission and that the speedo from a automatic wouldn't work at all.
Is this guy blowing smoke or is there something I should watch out for?

Thanks

I have both...never disconnected the speedo to check. Hmmmm. Doesn't make sense to me. They are different cables but I've never heard that one.

Unless the needle on the auto rotates in the opposite direction, I've never seen one that does, there is no difference. Be sure to get one with the same type of connector on the back. There are screw on and slip on cables.

Thanks! I thought the guy was full of crap but I figured it best to ask someone who had the correct answers.

the main problem I can see with putting an older 140 speedo in an 82 injected car would be that there is apparently some sort of speed sensor for the fuel injection inside that stupid 85 mph stock unit. .with a separate wire out of the speedo that goes into the injection computer. ..

have NO CLUE what happens if you run it without that wire to hook up to on an older speedo. but I suspect it could cause some problems

I have a 120 mph speedo (year?) in my 1981and the cable hookup was different but for some reason it works.
I don't know what that wire is for but I did not notice a difference from that after changing 4 years ago.
Could it be that the wire is for that oxygen sensor in the exhaust that has to be replaced every 10,000 miles?
