pull it out and fill it with small rocks/pebbles and shake shake shake! Should get rid of any algae built up in the pretty easily, but make sure you rinse it out well before putting it back in the car

I've pulled the thing out and blocked the lower hose fitting and then filled with dishwasher soap and really hot water. Let it sit overnight and a bottle brush and mine turned out really clean. I ended up getting Marks metal overflow contaner last year anyway, but the dishwasher soap did clean the bottle out well.(great for cleaning out dirty coffee carafe as well)

Just cleaned mine today. Soaked it in hot water and TSP for an hour. Got a baby bottle brush from the $0.99 cent store (got 3 in a pack)! The brush right out of the package cleans the sides wonderfully. To clean the bottom and top I bent the brush in an "L" shape. It's now clean as a whistle. Got some 50/50 coolant from O'reilly's/Kragen on sale for $6.99/gal to fill the over-flow.
