Video of first run- just for fun.

Post by Danno »

ok, so it wasn't really the first run, but it WAS the second run. I cut out the beginning (talking to my son, ethan-->can you see him?) and the last part (Beth running towards the camera in her little pink heels-woohoo)

It should run in windows media player, it's about 3 megabytes. I rev my engine around the middle of it and the rest of the sound is hard to hear, so if you turn it up, you are gonna get a blast midway (that's your AT WORK WARNING!!!)

Don't worry I only drove in a circle around my block and the alley over, and I never went over 10mph....

he loves it. I actually had to wait until he got home and let him think we just fixed it, he's been "helping" me work on it for weeks now, and he'd be sad if he knew I got it running without him. Someday when he's old enough to understand, I'll break the news to him, lol.

I can't wait until he can do more to "help" than poke at things with a screwdriver and pretend to use it. He doesn't really know tool names yet, (he's got hammer, screwdriver, flashlight, saw, wrench) and i'm so disorganized that I can't utilize him as a gopher yet....

okay, first the reprimand; no seat belts on the kid! What sort of example is that?

Now, congrats on getting it going and at least making it around the block without needing the tow strap!

Can't remember the last time I saw a Spider with whitewall tires

Had to watch that twice. The first tme I was so focused on the woman with the camcorder I missed the Spider moving. Just kidding. Its a great feeling to start a car for the first time and drive it. Best of luck

Congrats! Another Spider on the road. My son also helps me work on the car, and so we share in the elbow grease (he also thinks he gets to drive it when he turns 16 -- lol!)

If I get ahold of the title today I'll be getting plates on it. I must admit that this morning I drove it to work (ohhhh, so illegal). Luckily, I live in nowhere-ville, and my drive to work is about 7 miles of country highway. It really runs pretty good at highway speed (i had it up to a hair over 55) I'm wondering about running temps for your engines. My temp gauge seems to only barely make it over the 120 degree mark for that long of a drive. It does move when I turn the car on, so I assumed it works fine. Just the other day, though, after a mile of in town driving I swear the needle pointed straight up.

I need to get that throttle cable on it right per Mike's suggestions. I must have popped the cable off, because I thought my tranny went out, then I realized it wasn't dying, and flooring it wasn't making a difference. I put it in first (idle handled that fine) and drove into a field entrance and popped the hood, easy fix, but not safe, I'm sure.

Having problems working out the rear tail and signals. I'm starting to think I have several shorts in the system, and also that my signal blinker doesn't work. More on that to come....

Mannn is that engine loud, I really need some exhaust system on it. Windows were down because exhaust dumps out right underneath the passenger seat, and I didn't want to pass out on my drive to work with the top up.

Anyway, I don't know if the clutch in there is new or what, but it grabs very nicely and the shifts are smooth. I need to drive a "nice" spider though, so I can compare apples to apples. Any offers? lol.

engine temp should be in the 180 range if the thermostat works; it may be missing or stuck open.
Most of the problems with rear lights are ground related, not shorts. Clean all of the ground connections associated with the rear lights. Also clean the bulb sockets. Adding a ground or two to the rear lights also helps

Flashers was one of the problems I had early on. Could be: Bad flasher unit (under dash near stearing wheel). My problem was one side would flash but the other would not. Found a bad ground in the driver side front indicator. I was able to isolate by systematically disconnecting lights until that one showed up.

Again another one of my problems (yes it is a FIAT), was one of my temperature sensors was not reading correctly. A previous owner had disconnected the temp sensor and was running from temp guage off the temp cut-off (in my car both were in-line with the spark plugs), the temp sensor is in the rear the temp cut-off is in the front. When I reconnected both the sensors, the dash read the car was running HOT, but that was a false indication. Replacing the temp sensor corrected my read out problem.

Based on the trees and the leaves you must live in a warm climate. If the thermostat is bad, the radiator won't get hot nor will the engine. That's a pretty simple test with a hand. You can tell pretty quickly if your engine is warming up!

My car reaches temperature (straight up) in only a few miles of driving.

If you've been reading my posts about the lights killing the engine, Mark is right about tracing and cleaning the connections. You also might want to check your fuse box. I had some bad/marginal fuses that were causing some of my issues. If you fuse box is getting hot to touch on either side of the fuse, replace the fuse in that holder!

good suggestion about checking the fuse box. The terminals can get loose and corroded. Clean them up with a small wire brush and bend the terminals so the fuses are tight

thanks for the advice, guys. Keep in mind that I have NO ORIGINAL LIGHTS on this car anymore except for the headlights and the side markers. I've been able to mark most of my connections, but I can't seem to get the right hand signal. I know which one I THINK it is based on wiring diagrams, but it just ain't working. I'll keep going at it and hopefully I'll get it soon. I'll start a new thread specifically for this transition to new lights....
