water pump pulley alignment

Post by ajnsbdfr »

I just bought a new water pump from Napa and the pulley on the shaft is about 1/4" further out from the pump than the original. Is this something that usually gets fixed/adjusted 'in the field' or should i return it?

I too ONCE purchased a water pump from the local autoparts store  . You need to get it from Auto Recambi, vicks or IAP. Everyone else has a close match but not exact. The one I purchased spunn fine when turned by hand but, the impeller would rub againse the block when the engine was running. Nasty noise. I asked the guys in the local FLU and they all have had problems with water pumps from local autoparts stores. So, you're not alone here. Just return it and get the right one from somebody who knows the parts.

There are multiple water pump offsets, at least 3, not all vendors are aware of this. Plus since you can mix and match pumps and pulleys you never know what you might have. You could use the pump you've already purchased if you use a different pulley. Or if you have the taller 3.4" pump you can press the flange down lower, to make it a 3.2" pump. Anyhow.. here's a little more information that might help explain the situation:

With regards to the impeller contacting the #1 cylinder, it can happen with the correct/stock pumps. There is such close tolerance you need to take a few steps to prevent the contact. The problem results from mounting holes in the pump body that are larger in diameter than the diameter of the mounting bolts. This condition can let the pump slide laterally and vertically prior to tightening the mounting bolts.

Once you get the pump on and the mounting bolts loosely installed, slide the pump to the passenger/exhaust side and do a final tightening.
