I thought Toyotas were the only cars with that problem. I can't imagine going through something like that.

WOW. I love Road America. WHat a beautifull track. Every time I had a chance to get there, I did. And the safety improvements they've made of the last many years make this sort of incident all the more bizarre. CRAZY!!

now, just imagine hitting those tire walls on a motorcycle!

I understand that car-racers really hate the gravel-traps.... but they sure have saved a LOT of motorcycle racers' lives. Tire-walls arent as soft as they look when you don't have a shell around ya....
I'm no Boy-Racer..... but if I can't take every on-ramp at TWICE the posted limit.... I'm a total failure!

Was at Road America on Saturday. Love that track. I really need to get a fiat out there some day.

I have had the good fortune to have raced RA literally dozens of times - both as a racer and as a track day instructor. It seems that the track has a reputation for being hard on brakes. That might be the case with the really big cars - but formula cars and small bore racers don't have those issues. Frankly, there are so many long straights that the brakes have plenty of time to cool -

But this crash certainly seemed to be caused by braking problems. And turn 1 has a rumble strip on the outside corner that has the tendency to launch cars in the air - the gravel doesn't do much good....if you look closely at the video - there are barely any tracks in the gravel until near the tires. The gravel just doesn't have a chance to grab the car. That and the high speed... :D

Glad he was OK - looked scary at first.

I had a ticket to the event - but the wife had other plans.....oh well.
