Help with brake system 124 spider

Post by ajnsbdfr »

My Fiat 124 1970 sat in the Garage last 6 years. So I Installed New Master Cylinder because the other one was 40 years old/ seal was leaking. Replaced Calipers/lines and compensator valve in the rear. I bench bleeded the Master Cylinder before it was installed. I have made several attemps to bleeding the front calipers, and air is still in the system. Currently have no pedal. The rear calipers are just as difficult. Their are no apparant leaks, just no pedal. I have not replaced the Booster, but It should not interfere with the system. Anyone have any ideas?, does the motive bleeder work, currently using hand held bleeder.

with no pedal at all, it's almost certain that you have air in the master

Is the car on a hoist or on jack stands? If on a hoist, the rear axle can sag, closing the bias valve and making it very difficult to get fluid to the rear calipers.

Can you confirm that you don't have any leaks at the connections on the MC? This was causing me some problems until I found one of my brake lines hadn't seated properly and was allowing leakage at the connection at the top of the MC.

HMM, that is kinda strange. Especially for the left front. That one seems to gravity bleed itself. If you are sure about the MC then maybe your lines are clogged.

When bleading the brakes were you able to flush all the old brake fuid out and see new fuid at each caliper? Assume the answer is yes. Did you replace the hoses from the resevoir to the MC and check the rubber gasket that connects the hoses to the MC as well as the plastic that plugs into the top of the MC? I had a similar issue where the plasic in the 7mm tube to the MC was craked as well as the plastic insert. I had air being drawn into the MC from the top connection point. That was one of many problems. Ultimately had to replace 7MM hoses to MC, MC, hard lines to hoses, brake hoses and rebuild calipers with new blead screws to get the pedal to feel firm. The only part of the braking system that was still good was the booster.

With that said, did you check the line to the booster?

I know this is all basic stuff. Getting the brakes working on these cars after sitting for a while can be a real PITA.

when i did my full system restore, i also couldnt get the system bled. finally ended up pulling the bleed and filling each caliper using a small funnel. after that, bleeding was a breeze.

apply about 5 psi to the resevoir (( i have even blown into it when necessary)) ( keep an eye on the fluid level) and open the front bleeders one at a time till all the air is out, repeat with the rears. iap sells a pressure bleeder which works great.
