Did anything significant change in the steering wheel fitment in the last years? My question is about a steering wheel that is advertised for sale, but listed as fitting 1972 - 1980 models. If it fits on a 1980, why would it not fit on a 1983?
This is the wheel in question. Nobody snag it out from under me!!

Re: steering wheel fitments
to use that wheel on a 78 or earlier car you will need a hub for it.

I love it! Folks with thin wheels want thick ones. Folks with leather want wood.grittracing wrote:i have a 68 wheel on my 80...
I'm with you though. I have a Moma that has been sitting in the box it came in for about 7 years. It is so lovely that I think of installing it during every Winter season. Then I take my Spider out of storage, see its lovely stock mahogany-look wheel, sign with simple pleasure, and put the Momo back in its box.

That is a great looking steering wheel! For the early Spiders (like mine) you need the hub adapter. For the later years, you shouldn't need the adapter.
P.S. it was great meeting you this weekend (except for the fact that you reignited my desire to get another bike, and unfortunately that isn't going to be a possibility anytime soon ). I hope the switch works!

I found another steering wheel, so I'm not going to be bidding on the bay link above. Looks like a nice wheel for someone.

I like the look of the faux wood ones, so classic. But when I drove it it was hard to uncurl my fingers after! I switched columns to a 79. Drove for 10 hours last weekend and it felt great!
1978 Spyder 1800 make that 2L! Finally making real progress!
Re: steering wheel fitments
Long story, but I wound up buying the wheel in the eBay link above. I had decided NOT to buy it, but forgot that I had set up an Auction Sniper "snipe" for the auction. In the end I'm glad I did. I got the wheel for the bargain price of $107. I installed it yesterday and I think it looks great. Judge for yourslf:
I did some minor modification/fabricating/MacGyvering to get the original Pinifarina crest horn button to work with the trim ring included with the new wheel.
For a little over a hundred bucks, I'm happy with it. Of course, now I want to update my dash and console wood veneer with a richer mahogany finish to match the wheel. It never ends.
