Recommendation on carpet and door panel sourcing

Post by tdskip »

Hi guys - I'm just full of newbie questions today :D

So assuming the deal goes through I'm going to need a carpet set and door panels for my '73 Spider. I'm 'just" going for driver quality at this point, but know that cheap is often worth less than what you pay for it.

Any recommendations for me?

Thanks guys!

Your best bet on carpet is to go to Lowes or Home Depot and buy the corn-row style indoor outdoor carpeting and cut it yourself using a utility knife. It looks very similar in style to the original though the colors aren't the same. It'll cost you about $45-$60 in carpet and the end result looks great in my car! You can get blue, red, black, tan and green at most stores. It is easy if you use your old carpet as a pattern.

Your best bet on door panels is to buy them used. They are mega-expensive new.

There are people like me who changed over the color of their interiors. I have a red/maroon set of door panels in very good condition, red back panels to match, red arm rests, and a red carpet set in the corn-row style with bound edges where it matters...I could be talked out of them for the right price...private message me if you want pictures and want to talk price.

Thanks John - will do.

She has had one repaint inn her original yellow. Would that make her interior color black, or did interior trim vary with yellow?

There are good door panels on a 77 spider in the Pick and Pull on Sunrise Ave.
The dummies put it in the Japanese section and not the Euro section.

if you cut the carpet yourself. You can just pull your old for the pattern. If you want to stay a little longer take what you cut to a auto carpet place and ask how much to sew the belting around the edge. I would bet $40 to 50 and you might ask them how much for the carpet before you buy from other sorce sometimes cheapier sometimes not. But tell him what you are doing he may give you a break on the sewing

If you don't like the color of the door panels you can also use vinyl paint on them. Clean the panels with something like Formula 409, sand them lightly enough to just scuff the gloss off them and paint on several thin layers of vinyl paint. It dries in about 15 minutes on a nice day. Since you have a black interior, even the inexpensive vinyl paint at Kragen or Auto Zone will hold up fine. When done, they'll look almost new!

I have a set of door panels in good shape if you want them. They are tan and I will give them to you for 40 bucks for both?

Let me know,

Jeff

Hi guys - thanks for all the ideas and offers to help. The car I was looking at fell through due to ownership/title issues. I'm still looking and will follow up when I find a car. Thanks!
