I need to replace my down pipe. It is loose and failing apart and making a loud awful noise that I first thought it was engine failing. Reading the forums here taught me to buy a stethoscope and listen to the engine and the timing belt, which were fine. The noise comes from the down pipe.
A previous owner cut off the flange at the end of the header and the homemade down pipe was held on to the end of the header with a single c clamp and believe or not that seemed to work for years, before the current noise started. I had already replaced the middle and end muffler.
Here is my question, some of the bolts that hold the exhaust manifold to the engine are broken off at the end of the bolt. How hard are these to replace?
Vicks sells several manifold/down-pipe combos that are reasonably priced around $289. Some are even chrome.
I want to know what my options are before I think about replacing the exhaust manifold.
Thanks
Mark

I don't know about getting those ones out. But here are new ones that are better.

Re: Bolts that hold exhaust header to Engine
How the heck did he cut off a section of cast-iron header, that's what I'd like to know? Wouldn't want to arm-wrestle him for beers!
The threaded fasteners that attach the exhaust manifold to the engine block are studs, not bolts. They are removable with a tool designed for this purpose, or by "double nutting" the exposed end. Pay attention to the different lengths; they are not all uniform. It looks like you're going to be purchasing new ones. Some of these studs penetrate into oil passages, so seal the studs with a copper-based hi-temp RTV. Some manifolds have gaskets to the downpipe; others don't Ask your new supplier to provide you with everything you'll need.

definatly watch out for the ones that back into the oilpassages. The stock studs have a non-threaded "bulge" in them. Thread the shorter end into the head and tighten. If you don't get it right, you will be forever smelling burning oil as it leaks out onto your header
