Hello.
I've notice that my car gets bad gas tank fumes in the cars cockpit. I've sourced it from the rear and have check and tightened every clamp under the hood and luggage compartment. Its especially bad if the top is up and one of the windows is open. Can anyone shed as to where this may be coming from?

Have you checked the lines while the car is running and the system pressurized? I've had that smell in the past but it was from a slight weep from an injector fitting.

Re: Petrol (gas) fumes in car.
I had a similar thing in my `77. What I eventually learned it was was rust in the seams between the bottom and top of the tank -- the part that rests on the trunk floor.
This escaped detection for some time because the visible parts of the gas tank as seen from within the trunk and when inspecting it from below seemed fine. But Alex at AVA told me the cause and suggested tank replacement as the best answer.
I bought a new gas tank from IAP during their big winter sale and had Alex install it this Spring. Problem solved. Oh, and my fuel mileage went form 24 MPG average to 26. The rest, I guess, had been evaporating!

Re: Petrol (gas) fumes in car.
Had this pr0oblem for months on our 81 spider. Tried everything ut the hose that runs between the filler cap and the gas tank. It was cracked, and leaked enough to cause the strong odor of gas in the cabin, but not enough to see anything on the ground. Also, be sure that hose is tightly connected at the top, or it will do the same thing. It's a pain to get your hand in there with a screw driver, but make the effort to really tighten down the clamp.

Re: Petrol (gas) fumes in car.
I think i may have found the answer.
I saw a similar post about gasoline fumes venting because of the carbon canister and mine has been removed. The lines are still there in the engine bay. I've since blocked off the line. Lets see.

Re: Petrol (gas) fumes in car.
My old 79 Spider had a real problem with gas fumes. Turned out one of the fuel lines that runs through the cockpit had almost rusted through and was seeping fuel. Pull up the carpet along your driver's side interior rocker panel and check your lines.
Re: Petrol (gas) fumes in car.
Had the same issue on my '77 - turned out to be the fuel neck filler hose.

Had similar issuen on FI 82. It was the vapor canister line. Replace the hose and the canister and problem solved.
