So Cal drive event June 26th

Post by So Cal Mark »

This is from Merkel Weiss, the Rear Engine Fiat Club;

I'm doing a traditional Rear Engine Fiat Club drive on Sunday, 6/26/11 and we return to my place (10440 Penrose St., La Tuna Canyon/Sun Valley) afterwards for BBQ. I have a big place w/ lots of (cars and) parking. You're all welcome to attend. This is a rather windy, but well paved and banked route that we have driven many times. It involves Foothill Blvd. to Osbourne/Little Tujunga/Sand Canyon to Placerita Canyon and back - about 1.5 hrs in all. It's already a set date and you are welcome to show up at 10:30. There is no need to bring food, it's already taken care of.

Do those of us who drive a 124 Spider have to do the run in reverse? :shock:

I assume the starting point to meet is the same as the finish point? I can't make it that day but have at least one OC 124 driver interested.

Should we RSVP Merkle if we're going? If so, I don't have his contact info.

The good thing about Merkels runs are, you get to run most anything. Fiats are the prime reason, but you normally get a few other pretty interesting cars there. Its always a good time, with plenty to talk about after. i made one run with him in my truck. Told him I couldnt make it because my car wasnt ready and he said just show up. i havent been there in quite a while, and I need to make it back.

I probably won't be there for the start of the drive because I'll be finishing up a big Italian Bike ride around that time (Gran Fonda Conalgo), but will see y'all there at Merkel's afterward. Will have the 500 PE#18 with me -- bicycle fits in the back!

It was a great day for a drive! The route took us on some very twisty roads through some beautiful scenery.
There were three Spiders (only one red one!), four X19s, a BMW and a Volkswagen GRS, or STP or something or other.
Here we are gassing up before heading into the hills:

And at the 1/2 way rest stop, sand Canyon and Placerita Canyon:

My wife had to work, so TommyClock's fiance was the lone female today, and she was a trooper. They're in the white with black stripe Spider in front of mine. Alvon showed up at the tail end of the day with his Prima Edizeoene (#18) so we all got to see how the engine bay is put together, and how his bike fits in the back. No kitten stuffed under the hood though.
Afterward we had BBQ and talked cars and Fiats in particular. Merkel is an engineer who has been in the auto industry his whole life, so it's fun to pick his brain.
