oil pan guard from IAP

I know somebody else out there has the oil pan guard for the later years Spiders from International. How is it to be installed?

We want one on our 1980 car. I bought it and supplied to to our mechanic (Fiat expert, not somebody random), and he can't figure it out. I think he even called IAP, since no instructions were provided. Would it matter that our car has an automatic transmission, while the guard from IAP is maybe designed for a manual transmission?

There seems to be a bracket at the side of the rad that you might have to drill a hole either side. Can't remember if the cross member had holes or you had to drill.

I think the front bolts up to where the stone guard "ears" bolt to the frame? Sorry, I don't have one but looking at the various pics of them and looking at my frame ('81)I "guess" that's where it goes.

Thanks for the photos! It's very clear how this should fit. Don't know if the radiator is different enough for the automatic transmission to be a problem.

I haven't seen this kind of guard sold for the 1800 and earlier engined models, but the later-year guard would probably work with some modifications.

Hi Adam,

I can tell you my original 72 bought back in the day came with the guard, it was kind of a sheet metal thing. So folks would take them off to work on the car then forget (!) to put it back on. I bet if you look real close under your car you'll see where the kind of sheet metal screws went into the frame members.

While searching for my new Spider I came across an original 72 on the Maryland Eastern Shore that still had its factory guard. Shouldn't have let that Spider get away.

Looks like they have got it bolting to the front towing eyes.
These come with a hole big enough for your thumb /a rope / towing hook to go thru and rolled edges for strength, yet only looks like a 3/8" bolt. Hopefully a big & thick stepped washer / spacer under the head ?
The ones from spiderpoint (Germany) are like the Alfa spider ones,which attach with a flat plate at the front, hard up under the radiator support crossmember and onto suspension crossmember behind engine.
However you mount them, they give you even less ground clearance.

So, our mechanic finished installing the oil pan guard. If we knew it we be so troublesome, we probably wouldn't have bothered. Again, a reminder that this car has an automatic transmission so the transmission cooler affected fit of parts.

The front attachment points on the car and on the guard required significant modification to fit. The guard was too wide and needed to be chopped and welded. He chopped and welded some on the frame too to make things fit, but I don't know enough details to elaborate.

Sounds like it may have been made for a 124 Coupe rather than a Spider ? I know the spider floor pans are shortened by about 5" ? both front and back, but they seem narrower at the front too somehow. I have been looking for a splash guard / under pan without any success and a Coupe one is just too wide and too long to fit.
