I have a few questions as I begin preparing to change the manifold gasket on my '82 Turbo Spider and intend to have the turbo rebuilt as well while it is all apart.
First, I have the Brooklands repair manual, and it states that the turbo-to-manifold connection on early turbos had a gasket and they recommend discarding the gasket and NOT re-installing when putting back together. Mine has such a gasket. Does this sound right to you?
Second, the manual states the bolts that hold the turbo onto the manifold are special single-use bolts that must be replaced if the turbo is removed. My turbo is actually missing two of the four bolts! Do you have any idea what size/type of bolts these are and where I could purchase them?
Finally, any recommendations on where to send the turbo for the rebuild? Just doing some basic web surfing, I found two companies that claim to have rebuilt IHI RHB6 turbos for the Fiat. They are Spooled Motorsports (http://www.spooledmotorsports.com) and Goss turbochargers (http://www.webdiesels.com).
Thanks.

The only reason to leave the gasket out would be that the gasket may promote warpage of the surface due to its' thickness. If the gasket compresses at the bolt holes the surface between the holes may warp, especially if the bolts are overtightened. Leaks in the turbo system will effect the benefits of the turbo, so if you're going without a gasket make sure the two surfaces are very flat to eliminate any leaks
As for one-time-use bolts, those are usually torque-to-yield bolts that stretch to acheive the proper torque. I'd just get a good grade eight bolt with a locknut to replace the missing bolts. And use anti-seize on all exhaust bolts
