DC Fiats Raduno Primavera 2011

Post by baltobernie »

This year's Spring Gathering was co-sponsored by the Alfa Club of DC and us. Despite the (correct) forecast of rain, 73 people arrived at the Monocacy Battlefield Visitors Center in 52 Italian cars. The main parking lot filled quickly.

but everyone managed to get a spot

Our ride today was also promoted at Walter Reed Hospital, and we had 14 wounded warriors and family arriving by bus to co-drive. Some got to navigate in multiple vehicles during the day. Commemorative T-shirts were provided to each Warrior and sponsoring driver. After a short drivers meeting, we were on our way to another US Civil War site, Antietam Battlefield.

First of the group arriving at Antietam:

A few folks (as usual) were unable to follow the cue sheet and, uh, took a more scenic route, but despite the rain, everybody was OK. Imagine 52 vintage British cars in the wet!

Two Civil War re-enactors, friends of our prez, were on hand in full regalia to describe the battle and answer questions. Behind the group (above), running between the split-rail fences, is Bloody Lane; 5600 casualties over this road of 800 yds. All told, 23000 lost their lives in less than 8 hours, making this battle the single-worst day in American war history.

Drivers departed here in impromptu groups in a choice of routes with varying degrees of difficulty, all arriving at a restaurant near Camp David. Results of the Poker Run were tabulated (I managed a pair of nines :( ), and surprisingly, one of the warriors won the grand prize :D

Hope to see you at our next event, Spring Carlisle, May 21st. If you're at the show, stop by the DC Fiats tent for a sausage and beverage.
