Burning Rubber =8-0

Post by DUCeditor »

Back in the `60s when I was a teenager the second coolest thing you could do (after playing in a rock band) was have a car that "burnt rubber." I.e., "squealed out." And yes, I have to admit that I did that from time to time in my dad's bright yellow Malibu Super Sport convertible. (Shhh! He still doesn't know!) But I've never did it since. Well, that is until today.

I had been driving up NH 137 between Jaffrey and Dublin - a great road of relatively smooth, curving pavement. Not a fast road, but a fun one. Just right for the Spider. But ahead of me was a old guy (probably as old as I am!) in a Ford pickup truck who just insisted on stepping on the brakes at every curve. Grrrr! There was no legal (or safe) passing zone so I just hung back. Then, at the intersection of Rt 101, he put on his left turn signal (yea!) and stopped. I pulled to his right, almost stopped, looked both ways, and seeing there was an adequate opening in traffic to get across to the even more curvy stuff ahead, stepped on it.

"SQUEEEEEEAL" went Spidie's rear tires.

Nah. I didn't feel "cool." I did feel a little embarrassed. But mostly I was shocked. This is the first time I've ever done that in the Spider. And maybe a little impressed too. Breaking traction on a clean dry road from pure torque isn't easy with modern tires. Why, I didn't know the old gal had it in her!
