New stereo

Post by redek »

I have a '74 spider. The current shaft style radio is old and broken, is it simple to mount a new stereo that does not have shafts in the current location? I'm just not sure how to secure it properly.
Thanks
Daniel

Hi,

I'm new here and have the same question, which I can't believe hasn't been addressed before. I see posts about cutting the shaft plate for DIN radios but nothing on constructing or buying any sort of DIN slide in mount to hold a modern radio unit.

Is there something completely oblivious I'm missing?

Thanks,
Mark

Is that really all there is to it?

All I did for mine was cut the opening to fit the din sleeve, bend the tabs and JB welded L-brackets from the console to the sides of the DIN sleeve. It seems to work fine, my only issue is the depth of my Sony CD required me to put a 1/4" spacer between the sleeve and the console to clear the heater housing. As well, the bundle of wires must be carefully redirected over the side of the stereo as there lacks sufficient clearance for the main bundle of wires behind the stereo.

Hi Adam,

How deep is your Sony item and where did you get the spacer?

Thanks,
Mark

Hey Mark, my Sony is model CDX-GT420U and it is about 6.5" deep. I bought the spacer for $10 from a Best Buy car install shop. Too bad all the new digital media decks (no CD or tape) have iPod caddies and what have you. It would be nice to have a deck that is only a few inches deep.

I rather like the iPod caddy but see the problem...

Hi Adam,

Do your remember which particular spacer that was?

Thanks,
Mark
