Maybe dumb question

I know these cars are hard to turn when sitting still. Is there anything I can do short of power steering that will help this problem. My arms are getting old.

Point the wheels in the direction you plan on going before stopping.
Do you have wide tires on the car. Thinner tires are easier.

Pump up the tires. Even rolling the slightest bit forward or backward while turning the wheel will help. Turning the wheel while the car is completely stationary puts strain on the steering components

It might be worth your time and effort to jack up the front of the car and make sure nothing is binding. Some have had the damper seize up, and crack the mounting points. Something to consider.
