Auto Trans

Post by WarbirdAL »

Hi ya'll, is there any difference from like a 1974 auto trans and a later model trans? I understand it is the same as the Chevette trans or something like that. I have a 74 with auto, get on the highway and you hit 5k rpm just to go about 70 mph. Any thoughts? anyone have experience with the auto trannies? Mark? Mark? the tranny works fine otherwise thanks!

What size tires are on your car?

the auto tranny didn't come in a Spider until 79 and the rear axle ratio was 3.58 then. An early car would have a 4.30 rear gear and the auto doesn't have an overdrive. It would be about the same as leaving your manual tranny in 4th gear.
I'll bet that puppy gets off the line pretty well

Mark, is the auto trans in the 79 the same one used in the 74 124 sedan?

ahh, more info! I was thinking you had swapped an auto into an early Spider. I don't think GM was making the th180 in 1974 but I'll check my books on Friday

thank you very much. Sometimes I hesitate to mention the sedan as this is the Spider forum, but by golly they are related!
