Interesting information. Looks like the want everyone to think these cars are worth more than they really are so that the dealers that use their guides can try to get more money from uninformed buyers. I don't think the market actually supports those values. It doesn't do any good without some sort of condition description. You can find original unmolested 79 spiders in good to fair condition for 3-4K and you can find 79 spiders that are ready for the scap yard. I have seen totally restored spiders sell for less than 10k it all depends on the local market and what someone is willing to sell for and what someone is willing to pay.

I agree, that IS very interesting... I can't believe the market would be supporting that.

It's too bad, I remember when the Nada listing was actually accurate. Maybe it's just a fluke.

All I know is that I could only get $2600 out of the insurance company representing the lady who hit me 3 years ago for my beautiful '73. God I miss that car.

But, sweetheart (my '76 I purchased last year) is coming along great... I have no complaints so far. it's a keeper.

Not sure how the collector car insurance works in your state. But in michigan i pay around $300 a year for full coverage. For 20k coverage if it is totaled that is the amount i get. But it also falls under collector car plates $35 for a life time but i can only drive it so much per year. You should look into it.

I didn't want to restrict when I could drive my car so I went with Stated Value Insurance. I have a neighbor with a beautiful XKE but I have never seen him drive it. It has collector plates. He sits in his garage and smokes cigars and looks at it. To each his own.

I appreciate the information about classic insurance... but yeah I drive my car way too much for any of that.

It's not my only car by any means, but I just love driving it. I live in Houston and don't mind the heat most of the time, so it's almost always Spider weather : )

It certainly would have helped to have that much coverage three years ago though.

Among Ducati motorcycle owners there is a small subset who treat their classic bikes that way. And among Ferrari owners it is a relatively large subset.

Although I tend to laugh at those people part of me is glad that they exist. They are creating and preserving tomorrow's museum exhibits.

But to me its all about the driving and riding.

My Spider is beautiful and attracts attention everywhere I take her. But a "show car" she is not. Nor would I want her to be for fear of falling into the own it but don't dare drive it trap.

And as to re-sale value who gives a flying hoot? Unless of course one is foolish enough to sell theirs.

As to insurance... I have liability only on my Spider. I know the insurance won't give me anywhere near what I consider its personal value. And insurance, to me, is to cover things one can't afford to lose. My emotional pain would be the same with or without an insurance check, and my life would go on regardless.

I also have a 1966 ford pick up with collector car insurance to. And i drive it every day to and from work and to chase parts ect ect. Never had a problem from the insurance comp. When my spider is done it will be a daily fair weather drivr to. I plan to drive it as much as i can. I figure reg. Insurance isnt going to give me what I have in the car.$ and emotionaly.so i will take a 50/50 shot with collector car insur. And a couple people i know with it have not had a problem when filling a claim. But it is a risk

We just got our 76 spider apraised last week for insurance purposes and had results similar to that NADA price value. The appraiser was really impressed with it and after he did all his calculations and whatnot he valued it between 9000- 10 000$. We weren't expecting it but Im not surprised because I see okay spiders selling for like 15 000$ on eBay all the time!! There's a couple on eBay right now selling for 16 000$ I wonder if the values rising bc of the fiat return to America?

I think this is what the local tax appraiser is using to value my car. D**n taxes.

Asking for and selling are two different things. The three on Ebay for $16,000 are from a restoration company that hasn't sold one of them yet. They keep expiring and getting re-listed, but only as "buy it now" so you can't even see what people are willing to bid on them. They're nice cars - about as nice as a Spider gets - but the lack of sales would say they are overpriced.

The NADA values on all cars are going a little nuts right now. There are two things helping all used vehicles with a tricle down effect on classic cars. 1. NADA actually moved values of used cars up in the last month and had to issue a correction to the monthly publication for the first time in over 20 years. used cars are selling for more now then they were two months ago for the same year/make/model. There is a shortage of supply in the market as manufacurers have tightened production and the Japanese parts cross almost all car manufacturer supply lines. 2. The fuel prices are helping drive up the price of fuel efficient cars. I suspect the values will come back down in a few months. Finally, unlike 10 years ago when there wer a good number of running spioders on the road the supply of drivable spiders seems to have leveled off.
Buon giro a tutti! - enjoy the ride!

Bumping this old thread, NADA keeps appreciating the value of our cars.

Lol, NADA gives MSRP for my '82 as $12,290.
I have the original sales contract from January 20,1983 when my car was purchased new for $10,995. The contract also specifies (hand written) that"I understand that FIAT N.A. May cease operations in this country and that there may be changes in the administration of the factory warranty that are beyond the control of Graffeo's or any other dealership."

The difference in MSRP was the settlement with you from the dealership. It was their way of telling you that once Fiat moves on your warranty will be null and void.
