Steering U-joint-What kind of grease?

Post by Fiat88 »

I refinished/repainted the U-Joint which connects the steering column to the steering box input shaft. What kind of grease should be applied to it? Thanks.

Those universal joints are sealed and any topical grease application will not help. The joints are staked into the yokes and non removeable. Another good reason to save that part on a parts car. A needle fitting on a grease gun may be able to get some grease in there.

I know they are small but how do you expect a Lithuanian to hold onto the shaft as it turns round and round. May not have much room for your legs when you have one under there either.

Thanks for the heads up Matt. Glad I didn't try to clean the old grease out.
