1980 spider 2000 5 speed manual transmission

Post by fjdriver »

I have a 1980 spider 2000 that needs a new trans I have found many for sale online but they all state they are for a 1980 124 Spider does anyone know for sure if these are in fact the same thing? will the 124 manual trans fit the 2000 model ?

Thank You fjdriver

The short answer is yes.
The model designation changed from 124 to 2000 Spider in 1979 when the engine was changed to the 1995 cc, (same tranny) but the majority of people, including Spider owners still call them all the 124. And, even though there are no 124s visible on our later cars, it's still on the serial number plate on the firewall (ZAF124CSO on my 82).

Watch out for used trannies, that is a weak spot on these cars. Every used trans I have tried has had some problems.
Depending on what is wrong with yours, you could have a local mechanic fix it, and you'd know what you have. If you don't mind shipping, I could fix or rebuild it. May other Fiat vendors would do this too. If you are on the East coast you could use Fun and Imported Auto, if you are on the West coast you could use Allison's.
