for all you freaks.....

Post by azruss »

who like in progress pix, I finally got the final shape of my airdam after a month of glassing, grinding, glassing, grinding, glassing, grinding...you get the picture. still have more grinding to do on the back side to even out thickness plus a lot of finish sanding. The air dam sticks out as far and matches the profile of the bumper. should have about 6" of ground clearance, give or take. Modified the original design by recessing the center. this allow more hot arizona air to the radiator as well as reduce the chance of the nose scraping. And yes, it does produce vaccuum under the car and starts sucking the car to the road at speeds above 45 mph. also takes about 5 mph off of top end. ...As i told my body shop customers, it has to get ugly before it gets pretty. :D

Russ, that air dam's looking sweet! Are you planning to go completely bumperless?

I'm retro-ing back to early bumpers. With the bumpers, the spoiler doesnt look as radical. When i get the spoiler to the primer stage, i'll post pix with the bumper. I left the brackets on the car to pull the bumper on and off so i could match the spoiler curve to the bumper and still have room to sand. There was also a clearance issue at the top corners i needed to remedy.

Interesting, how much clearance is there gonna be between that spoiler and the ground?

You do nice work! Did you use foam to do the initial set up?

the airdam should have around 6" of ground clearance. would love to go lower, but i think i will have enough problems with scraping as it is.
I built the original airdam back in the mid 80s when i had a glass shop and a chopper gun. I used a combo of a 70s vintage glass spoiler for a 240z, sheetmetal and lots of old style modeling clay, clear vinyl box tape. this was just a plug and i pulled a mold off it which i still have. the current mods were made by cutting up a spoiler I still had in the mold and moving stuff around.
