Horn is possessed!

Post by surfingfreeman »

Ok here was a weird one, got in the car and left work and as I turned onto the road my horn started honking intermittently without any particular pattern. The horn button was not depressed or stuck however I am hearing a kind of "brushing" noise as I turn the steering wheel that seems to be coming from inside the steering column. I finally pulled the car over and turned off the ignition and the horn kept intermittently honking and I could hear the relay chattering away. Finally I disconnected the negative lead to the battery to stop the horn as people were starting to stop as they drove by to see if everything was ok. I finally pulled the #10 fuse which I believe controls the juice to the horn. There is an alarm on the car but I don't think that had anything to do with it. Any ideas? Thanks.

Most likely one of the copper 'tangs' which connects with the ring on the back of the steering wheel has broken off and is rattling around inside your sterring wheel boss. You need to remove your steering wheel which will show two (I think) spring-like copper pieces. To ensure your horn works you will need to rivet (or similar) the broken tang back into place to connect with the ring on the back of the wteering wheel.
