I need new carpet, but,
before I invest I was wondering about dynomatting. Is it worth the investment or should I just put the carpet down and call it quits? I'm more worried about heat than I am about sound.
Re: I need new carpet, but,
I'll be the first to chime in, but just my opinion, I haven't done it yet.
Dynomat is a good product but expensive. Lizard skin is an alternative often mentioned.
Anyway I'd definitely put down something for heat and noise under the carpet. Might as well while you are there. It does make a difference. Get up as high as you can on the inside firewall and also under the back seat cushion and seat back. If you are really ambitious you can do the inside of the doors too.
Here is a cheap alternative I'm considering dispite skepticism on the part of other posters when I posted about it last year. It's called EZ Cool Insulation http://www.lobucrod.com
Let us know what you decide.

Re: I need new carpet, but,
i pulled out everything...got a remnant from lowes and installed.... BIG MISTAKE NOT PUTTING ANYTHING DOWN UNDER CARPET....ended up pulling it all back out and using a similar replacement product to the ez cool... you are right to worry about the heat..and you get the bonus of the sound insulation...able to hear the car instead of the road makes me happy
Re: I need new carpet, but,
I'm gonig to pass on the Lizard Skin - I'm sure it's a great product, but, I don't trust myself with a spray gun.
Square footage wise - how much do I need to purchase? If it's a lot, I may opt for the alternative brand and give it a shot. After all, it can't be any worse than I have under there now.

Re: I need new carpet, but,
I have this stuff from Eastwood. It's just as good as Dynamat and cheaper.

I also bought this to go under the carpet for heat. Since I bought the Eastwood product, I might just sell this stuff. Won't know until I put the car together.
The heat shield is nice quality and cheap. It's at the bottom of the page. I bought all my interior supplies from this company. Great quality items and cheap.

Re: I need new carpet, but,
If you go to a larger carpet only store they will have mineral wool carpet padding. It is somewhat similar to the original padding/underlayment. I picked up a 6 foot by 6 foot piece which was more than enough to do the entire car for $30. Its about 1/2" thick and works great. I used spray adhesive to adhere it to the floors and sheet metal, then secured new carpet to it via screws like the original. The carpet will not slide around on the mineral wool insulation like on the smooth surface of the dynamat. The car is super quiet, meaning I only hear the engine/exhaust and not the road.

Thanks for the idea Matt. My carpet always looks like shite because of it sliding around.manoa matt wrote:The carpet will not slide around on the mineral wool insulation like on the smooth surface of the dynamat. The car is super quiet, meaning I only hear the engine/exhaust and not the road.

I have to boo that joke......So Cal Mark wrote:just make sure the carpet matches the drapes
So it sounds like the best idea may be to go with the mineral wool for the floor and go with a spray on application for the engine compartment.
Re: I need new carpet, but,
the dyno-matting will cost you about $300 to do all your car under the carpet. no trunk or door panels. did 1 side of mine realized I was going to need more just to finish the side I was working on and the next side. if there is a less expensive alternative that does the same job, I say take it !
