im spinning, im spinning
Re: im spinning, im spinning
i thought it was supposed to spin.. this is my 2nd spider and they both spun -- they work fine and i don't usually fix what works == is it worth it to repair this -- any circumstance for leaving it be.

It's your car. I could not handle it operating like that. You would be pleased with a properly working setup. I am sure there are plenty of used ones out there. I have one.
1978 Spyder 1800 make that 2L! Finally making real progress!
Re: im spinning, im spinning
so i took 2 of the 3 bolts out and loosened the 3rd swung the plate over and seen the nut securly tightened (about flush with the shaft) noticed the plastic cup was secured with the ball and shaft and didn't wanna go to far and really screw it up .
should i
remove the nut and dissassemble - im thinking the plastic piece is broken
or just crank on the nut -- how tight should it be? is flush with the end of the shaft ok?
will this spinning shift give me problems with gear engaugment??

Re: im spinning, im spinning
Have someone work the shifter while you observe from below.
Reinstall the other two fasteners just into the lower block with the cover still swung out of the way before they start stirring the stick.
Watch the motion of the bottom of the shift lever as they go thru the gears.
The bottom of the lever with the nut on it should just rock side to side and front to rear as the bottom of the lever pivots on the ball sockets.
Also have them lift slightly on the lever as they work it.
You might find that you just need to re-tighten that nut on the bottom of the shifter to keep the plastic ball and locator pin properly located in the shift collar.
Good Luck
